Charles CHAPLIN
Charles CHAPLIN (1825-1891): fils d’un anglais marié à une française, il peignit la femme jeune avec autant de grace et plus de verité que François Boucher. Il ne se fit naturaliser français qu’en 1886. Elève de DROLLING, il débuta comme peintre de portraits et de paysages. Ses premiers ouvrages marquèrent une nature puissante et forte guidée par un grand souci de réalisme. Mais il ne tarda pas à modifier sa forme pour le genre gracieux qui fit sa réputation. Son dessin a la force et la souplesse, son coloris est brillant et délicat. Sa qualité d’étranger l’empécha d’obtenir le Prix de Rome. Cependant le Jury lui décernait de nombreuses médailles. Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur en 1879, officier en 1881. Il fut, du reste, le peintre favori de l’Impératrice EUGENIE.
