Charles Emile Vacher de Tournemine
Charles Emile Vacher de Tournemine appartenait par sa famille à la haute aristocratie. Il s’engagea dans la Marine de 1825 à 1831, et participa notamment à la prise d’Alger. De retour à la vie civile, il suivit les cours du célèbre peintre Eugène Isabey. Son goût pour le voyage l’amena naturellement à peindre des scènes de la Turquie, d’Egypte, d’Asie Mineure, d’Algérie, de Chypre, etc. Il fit donc partie de la première génération de grands peintres orientalistes, mais à la différence de beaucoup d’entre eux, il se rendait sur place. Seule l’Inde, qu’il representa pourtant, ne figure pas dans son parcours.
Durant la Commune de Paris, Tournemine fut nommé conservateur du musée du Luxembourg.
