Maurice PROST
Né le 13 mars 1894 à Paris. Mort en 1967. XXè siècle. Français.
Sculpteur animalier. Elève de Charles VALTON. Il a exposé à Paris, au Salon des Artistes Français où il y a obtenu une mention honorable en 1922, une médaille d’argent en 1936 et une médaille d’or en 1963. Il est décoré de la Légion d’Honneur en 1933.
Maurice Prost aurait pu être simplement un artiste animalier talentueux, comme ses amis avec qui il a partagé la passion de son art et des animaux. Mais Prost est remarquable par son oeuvre et sa vie. Alors que le sort vient de le frapper (il est amputé d’un bras dès les premiers mois de la guerre de 1914), il abandonne son métier de ciseleur
en joaillerie et opte pour sa passion, la sculpture animalière. Il sera sculpteur, sculpteur en taille directe, le plus dur des métiers d’art. Ce choix est surprenant compte tenu de son handicap, mais révélateur d’une volonté et d’un courage qui le caractériseront tout au long de sa vie. De 1919 à 1945, Prost réalisera la plus grande partie de ses créations, souvent très originales. Artiste reconnu par le public, la critique et ses pairs, il a reçu au cours de sa carrière les plus hautes distinctions, il a laissé une oeuvre, qui, par
sa diversité illustre une des époques les plus riches du XXè siècle.
