Georges WASHINGTON
Né le 15 septembre 1827 à Marseille, mort en 1910 à Paris.
Peintre de genre, sujets typiques, compositions animées, portraits, scènes de chasse, paysages, animaux. Orientaliste. Ses peintures présentent essentiellement des vues d’Algérie, du Maroc et des scènes animées de chevaux caracolant. Son nom est un pseudonyme, la mère du peintre, Marie Besse, ne l’ayant reconnu qu’en 1868. Elève de Picot, il est considéré comme un peintre d’histoire et de bataille. Il débute au Salon de 1857 et obtient une médaille de troisième classe en 1893. Il épouse la fille du peintre Félix Philippoteaux et fait de nombreux voyages en Algérie. Il est au Maroc en 1879, et sa production orientaliste lui assure sa renommée. A la fin de sa vie, il occupe à Montmartre un modeste appartement dans la cité dite ” Le château des brouillards “. Il a peint principalement des chevaux, des fantasias, des campements d’arabes, œuvres traitées avec un certain éclat chromatique. Ses peintures présentent essentiellement des vues d’Algérie, du Maroc et des scènes animées de chevaux caracolant. Ainsi son talent lui permit da participer à partir de 1857 au Salon des Artistes Français et ce durant près de cinquante ans.
