Antoine GADAN
Elève d’Edouard DETAILLE, Antoine GADAN arrive à Alger à l’age de 27 ans, où il rejoint son frère, qui exploite un domaine viticole à proximité de Bône. Il multiplie les paysages de la campagne bônoise, du massif de l’Edough, de la plaine de Boujimah, de la rive du ruisseau d’or. Plus tard, il peindra également dans les Aurès, à El-Kantara, Biskra, etc. Pour l’Exposition universelle de 1900, il réalise un stéreorama des côtes algériennes. Cette évocation voyagera à Londres et à New-York, et assurera au peintre une renommé. Il reçoit les éloges de Rochegrosses et de Jules Breton.
Gadan travaille d’après nature, tôt le matin ou le soir, il aime surprendre la nature à ses heures les plus intimes, quand des ombres et des brumes suaves planent sur toutes choses.
Son uvre est forte, caractéristique et telle qu’elle doit tenir une place de premier rang dans une histoire de l’art en Algérie.
